Description

This building, located at 73-76 and 73A Western Road in Hove, is a row of shops with a dwelling, dating from around 1865, with minor alterations made in the 20th century. The structure features stucco over brick with quoins. The layout includes three shop fronts, which are separated by entrances leading to a restaurant in the basement and a flat above. The shop fronts for Nos 73, 73A, and 74 are part of the north-west return of No. 18 Palmeira Square, while Nos 75 and 76 serve the dwelling above.

The shops display fluted pilasters with clustered brackets as capitals, and there are semi-circular acroteria that enclose an acanthus leaf design above the entablature, along with a balustrade over the opening to No. 73A and remnants of cresting. The shop fronts include two single and one double-fronted shop, with the single-fronted shops featuring display windows in reveals, and all upper lights having marginal glazing bars. No. 74 retains its original glazing in the shop windows, while the others have plate glass. The entrance to No. 73A has 20th-century half-glazed double doors that match its style, and No. 75 has a panelled door leading to the dwelling above.

The dwelling itself is two storeys high, with a symmetrical façade featuring one bay on each side. It has a balustrade, a moulded cornice with shaped brackets, quoins, and cambered window openings. The sash windows lack glazing bars, with the right bay containing three-light windows, each featuring a central round-headed light and multiple panes in the upper lights, alongside square-headed outer lights.
