Description
Numbers 84 to 89 Marine Parade are a row of terraced houses built in the mid-19th century. They are constructed of stucco, with the roof largely hidden behind a parapet.
The houses are four storeys high with an attic, set above a basement, and each has three windows. The facade of each house presents a nearly full-width, full-height canted bay window. A segmental-arched entrance, with an overlight, is positioned within the right-hand segment of the bay and is accessed by a staircase. Numbers 86 to 89 retain their original doorframes, complete with sidelights, framed by wooden Tuscan pilasters and an entablature. A continuous entablature links the ground-floor elements, while projecting sills are supported by console brackets. The ground floor windows have pelmeted heads, with elaborate scroll patterns on those to numbers 87 to 89. The first-floor windows have eared architraves and open onto a verandah that runs the whole length of the row. The verandah is supported by cast-iron brackets and chamfered wall piers projecting from the party walls, and it features cast-iron railings beneath a concave metal roof with wooden valance boards. A sill band is present at the second-floor windows, which have shouldered architraves topped by segmental pediments. The third-floor windows are segmental arched, with eared and shouldered architraves. The attic windows are round-arched, with continuous architraves interrupted by impost blocks and keystones, all tied together by a sill band which is broken by windows in numbers 85, 87 and 88.
The right return facade of number 89 faces Royal Crescent and has a single window. It features sill bands to the second and attic floors, with windows mirroring the main facade’s arrangement, except that the first floor has shouldered architraves interrupted by quoins and a keystone. Stacks are positioned on both party and end walls. Every ground floor window has a cast-iron window guard.
The interior has not been inspected, but retains railings to the stairs and areas. Numbers 68, 69, and 73 to 89 Marine Parade are grouped together with numbers 1-14 Royal Crescent.
