Description

Number 23 is a terraced house built around 1815, likely designed by Amon Wilds. It features a brick exterior in Flemish bond, with mathematical tiles and stucco on the bay spandrels, and stucco scored to imitate ashlaring on the return. The building has a two-span slate roof.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a dormer, with a one-window range. There is a flat-arched entrance accessed by a flight of steps on the return, topped by a shallow porch supported by a pair of brackets and flanked by Tuscan pilasters. The ground floor has a shop front from the 20th century, while above it is a full-height segmental bay with tripartite, flat-arched windows. The first-floor windows retain original sash designs, with a 6/9 configuration in the centre and 4/6 on the sides. The spandrils of the mathematical tile are complemented by stucco on the second-floor window spandrels. The roof has a parapet behind which is a flat-arched dormer.

A nearly full-width verandah on the first floor is rectangular and slightly bows out in front of the bay, featuring a metal concave roof and wooden railings in a lattice pattern. The stanchions are designed as open-fretted Ionic pilasters supporting an openwork entablature. There is a brick stack on the end wall. The placement of the bay slightly off the central axis suggests there may have been an early 19th-century entrance on the right party wall. The interior has not been inspected.
