Description

The Pavilion Theatre and Booking Office is a building located on New Road in Brighton, originally constructed around 1935 as a supper room for the Corn Exchange, designed by Robert Atkinson. When it was converted into a theatre, an adjacent early 19th-century terraced house was repurposed as the box office, which is included in this listing. The box office is finished in stucco and features a parapeted roof, standing three storeys over a basement with a single-window range.

The Pavilion Theatre itself is built of grey brick in Flemish bond, with stone dressings around all openings and a hipped metal roof. It rises three storeys and has a two-storey aisle wing to the right. The design incorporates stylised Islamic architectural forms, resembling Atkinson's Corn Exchange Theatre nearby. The main elevation features a pair of tower-like bays flanking a central bay, with all three sections sharing a lotus parapet that returns. Inside, the theatre retains a proscenium arch adorned with geometrical motifs, a Moorish-inspired ceiling, and three Moorish arches at the back of the auditorium. The building is included for its group value with the Dome and Corn Exchange.
