Description

The Corn Exchange entrance wing, located on Church Street in Brighton, was added in 1934 and designed by Robert Atkinson, with sculpture by James Woodford. The building features grey brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings around the openings, and has a parapeted roof.

The exterior consists of two storeys above a basement and includes a four-window range. The design is a stylized interpretation of Islamic forms, reminiscent of those used by Porden and Nash in the early 19th century. A metal marquee projects in front of a two-storey pointed-arch recess, which is adorned with relief sculpture. The central figure, depicted on a vesica piscis, represents the goddess Ceres in an Asian posture, flanked by three trumpeting angels on clouds.

The front wall slightly projects to form turrets on either side of the recess, with round-arched first-floor windows. To the left, there is an added wing featuring a horseshoe-arched first-floor window. The entrance is flanked by a two-light and a three-light window with twisted mullions.

Inside, the lobby has two bays with quadripartite groin vaulting, each cell illuminated by a roundel. Notable interior features include wood panelling in the waiting room located just outside the conveniences. The entrance wing is part of a group that includes the Dome and Corn Exchange, as well as the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery on Church Street.
