Description

Number 16 is a detached house dating from around 1830, located on the south side of Montpelier Terrace in Brighton. The house is built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a slate roof. The main block is two storeys over a basement and features a five-window front, while a two-window wing extends to the east, and a single-window wing to the west. A further three-window range is set back behind. The entrance has a flat arch framed by engaged Greek Doric columns that support an entablature with a modillion cornice. The doorcase has panelled reveals, slim fluted pilasters to the architrave, and decorative glazing to the overlight, with an original panelled door. All windows have cambered arches. A storey band runs along the facade, and the eaves are bracketed, with a hipped roof and side chimney stacks. Original sash windows survive in the left-hand ground-floor window of the eastern wing, and on the ground floor of the recessed western wing, though the upper windows of the latter are blank. The interior remains uninspected. Surrounding the property are brick walls, corniced and pedimented gate piers, and cast-iron railings with console brackets.
