Description
Four Oaks is a house dating from around 1700, with alterations made in the 19th century and again in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of red brick in both English and Flemish bond, with old tile hipped roofs. Originally comprising two main rooms with a rear stair turret, the house now has single-storey wings on either side. The exterior is two storeys with a single-storey section. It features three chimneys, one tall with a moulded top and a plaque inscribed "DE 1710 HE". A central square dormer window is visible. The east front, facing the road, has two bays with sash windows containing glazing bars. A retaining wall was rebuilt in the 18th century, although original brickwork is visible on the north side of the building. Single-bay, single-storey extensions are present on both the right and left sides. The right wing features a two-light casement window with a segmental brick arch. A 20th-century entrance door is set within a brick porch located in the angle of the left wing.
Inside, the original dog-leg staircase rises over three flights to the attics and features turned balusters, a deep moulded handrail, and square newel posts. A round-backed brick fireplace is located on the ground floor, with one original and one late 18th-century chimneypiece on the first floor.
