Description

West End Farmhouse is a hall house, dating to the late 15th century, with alterations and extensions made in the late 16th century and the 20th century. It is constructed of timber frame with painted render infill and some painted brick, and has an old tile gabled roof with visible rafter ends and a catslide on the south side.

The building is in an L-shape, comprising four bays by three framed bays, with an extension at the angle. The exterior is two storeys in part, and one and a half storeys in part, and features three chimneys, one on the front ridge with clay pots. There are 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars. The east-facing front has a single bay gable on the right, set beneath a brick roof tie. A 20th-century hipped enclosed porch, with a two-light window and a 20th-century entrance door on the right return, is also present. To the left is a two-bay section with four-light windows to the ground floor and two gabled dormers with two-light windows.

The interior of the 15th-century section contains large, plain ground floor joists. A central truss provides access to the roof tie, featuring large arched braces. On the first floor, there are large, chamfered brackets from posts to a moulded beam on the ground floor. The roof is a redundant crown post roof. The 16th-century section has chamfered joists on the ground floor, with shield stops at the ends, and a queen post roof.
