Description

The Old Rectory is a large house, originally built as a rectory in the early 17th century, likely around 1629, coinciding with the construction of the adjacent Church of St Mary. It was altered and extended in the early 19th century and the 20th century. The building is constructed of timber frame with painted brick infill, roughcast render, and tile hanging, and has an old tile roof with a hipped shape and two gables on the south side.

The plan is a large rectangular shape with smaller extensions at the rear. The house is two storeys high, plus a cellar and attics. It features four chimneys with corniced heads and clay pots, two of which have a cluster of three shafts. Early 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars are set in moulded frames.

The south-facing front features two gables in the centre and has tile hanging on the first floor, with roughcast render on the ground floor. The ground floor has three long, 19th-century casement windows. The first floor has four large sash windows, and a single sash window in each gable, providing light to the attics. A porch, probably from the early 19th century, has paired, thin half-columns on a plinth, supporting a heavy modillion cornice with a segmental pediment, and contains a glazed double door.

Inside, a 17th-century wooden chimney piece is located in the dining room. This features carved half-columns supporting six raised panels with circular insets and lions' heads, all within a surround with carved figures, a dentilled cornice, and a plain frieze.
