Description
The barn and adjoining cottage at St Michael's Grange, now serving as a playroom and cottage, date from the 16th century and were altered in the 20th century. The structure features a timber frame, with parts of the exterior covered in weatherboard and brick infill, topped by a clay pantile gabled roof.
The building has a long rectangular plan consisting of five framed bays, with a hipped midstrey facing southwest in the middle bay and the cottage extending to the northwest. The cottage has one and a half storeys beneath the continuation of the barn roof, which is hipped at the end. On the southwest side, there are three 20th-century casement windows, with the upper window breaking the eaves level and featuring a flat roof. A carriageway runs between the cottage and the barn, which is connected to St Michael's Grange by a 20th-century glazed link.
Inside the barn, there is a queen post roof with clasped purlins, arched windbraces, and arch braces connecting the posts to the ties. Two of the posts have jowels, and while some rafters have been replaced, other timbers have been reused.
