Description

Squires Almshouses, a group of six almshouses, were built in 1795. They are constructed of stock brick with red dressings and have a hipped slate roof. The building is one storey high and has a symmetrical design of 12 bays, comprising six windows and six doors. A broad pediment is centrally advanced. The windows and doors are topped with segmental arches. Stone hoods are bracketed above the doorways, although the doors themselves have been renewed. The windows are casement style. An oval panel is inscribed within the pediment, stating that the houses were erected and endowed for the perpetual use of six decayed trademen's widows of the parish by Mrs Mary Squires, widow, in the year 1795.
