Description
The Parish Church of St Mary's is a church, largely dating to the early 16th century, built on the site of an earlier church. It was altered and enlarged in 1818 and 1843, with galleries and a new roof added in 1876. The exterior is stuccoed and features a low-pitched roof with a parapet. The western tower, dating to 1535, has diagonal buttresses and a battlemented parapet.
Inside, the church has a 6-bay nave supported by buttresses and incorporating octagonal piers. Galleries are present on the west and north sides. The nave features 2-light aisle windows with Y tracery. A lower chancel adjoins the nave. The church contains a significant collection of monuments, including a monument to Sir Thomas and Lady Merry from 1633, created by Nicholas Stone and featuring demi-figures in oval niches. Other notable monuments include one commemorating Sigismond Trafford, who died in 1723, alongside his wife and daughter, along with original railings. Numerous other monuments, tablets, and floor slabs are also present.
