Description
Walthamstow Museum, also known as Vestry House, is a former parish workhouse that dates back to 1730, with an addition made to the north in 1756. The building is constructed of plum brick with red dressings and features a tiled hipped double-pitched roof, while the north extension has pantiles. The south front has two storeys and consists of five bays, with the two bays on the left set forward. The main entrance is located in the central bay and has an inscribed plaque above it. The windows are segmental headed with flush frames, featuring 12-paned sashes and glazing bars. There is a moulded timber eaves cornice. The north wing is lower and windowless, featuring a doorcase imported from Church Hill House, which has waterleaf capitals and an arched doorway. Inside, there is an original turned baluster staircase with a planked dado, along with simple original panelling in the entrance hall. Additionally, there is imported 17th-century panelling and a mantlepiece from Essex Hall.
