Description
The gates adjoining No 1 at the south-west entrance to The Grove are designed in an 18th-century style. They feature double wrought iron gates with a single gate on the right side, flanked by railings. The double gates have a topmost rail that is set in an inverted curve. The uprights have spear-headed finials that alternate in height, and there is a curvilinear design in the lock rail. The standards are panelled with small overthrows on either side of the gates. The topmost rails of the smaller gate and the railings also have an inverted curve.
These gates, along with the road bridge known as Leoni Bridge, the culvert, and the retaining walls to Carshalton Ponds, form a group with No 1 High Street and the entrance gates to The Grove. They are also associated with Honeywood Museum, the wall and gatehouse at Honeywood Walk, Anne Boleyn's Well, St Mary's, Madeley Cottage in Church Hill, and several items on the south side of High Street, including the Greyhound Inn, the wall to the east of the Greyhound Inn, the Church of All Saints, the north churchyard wall, and Nos 6 and 12 High Street.
