Description
Hampton Waterworks includes the Beam and Store Buildings, which were constructed between 1853 and 1855 by the engineer Joseph Quick and later extended in 1881-1882 by Alexander Frazer. Originally, there were two separate engine houses known as 'The Beam' at the west end and 'The Bull' at the east end, named after the types of engines they housed. Both engine houses are of equal height, but their facades are designed to appear as if they are two storeys for 'The Bull' and three storeys for 'The Beam'. In 1881, a lower single-storey range was added between the two engine houses. The entire group is built from Gault brick, featuring stucco cornices and some stucco window dressings on 'The Bull'. 'The Bull' once had a chimney stack at the front, which has since been removed down to the level of the engine house parapet.
