Description

The South African War Memorial is a cenotaph made of coarse-grained granite, featuring a slightly flared base set on a similar stone plinth. The outward face of the memorial is inscribed with the words "Union is Strength / Our / Glorious / Dead," and below this is an inscribed cross. The inner face, which overlooks a group of graves, bears the inscription "Eendraght maakt macht / Onzen / Gevallenen / Helden."

At the apex of each face, there is a low relief depiction of a springbok's head. The side elevations are adorned with a stylised stone wreath at the base and are inscribed with the dates MCMXIV (1914) and MCMXIX (1919) on the north and south sides, respectively.
