Description
The Buxton Monument is a stele memorial located in East Sheen Cemetery, dedicated to Markham Buxton, who died in 1927. It was created by his son, Alfred Buxton. The memorial features a tall granite stele topped with five antefixae, standing on a wider granite plinth that has an inscription at its base. The stele includes a bronze relief depicting a woman in classical dress playing a lyre, accompanied by the inscription "OUR SWEETEST SONGS ARE THOSE WHICH TELL OF SADDEST THOUGHTS." This bronze relief is signed by Alfred Buxton, a local sculptor who exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1910 to 1929. In 1927, he showcased a relief titled "Chanson Triste," which is likely this work.
