Description
Wimbledon Theatre is a theatre built in 1910 by architects Cecil Massey and Roy Young, possibly based on a design by Frank H Jones from 1908. The building is constructed of red brick and features a slate mansard roof, along with a copper dome atop an octagonal corner tower. It occupies an irregular corner site and has a four-stage tower with a Tuscan colonnade at the ground floor, which includes three triple square-headed entrances. The building has brick rusticated quoins and three-storey elevations on either side. The left side features a shop with canted bay windows above and a crowning modillion cornice. The tower windows are square-headed on the first and second stages, adorned with stone architraves and open segmental pediments, while the oval windows on the third floor are also topped with open pediments that merge to form a cornice. The interiors are elaborate, showcasing Baroque and Adamesque features, decorative plasterwork, and wrought iron balustrades in the galleries.
