Description
This former World War I Type G seaplane shed is a Grade II listed building. It features a steel frame set on a timber cill or brick plinth, with concrete foundations. The exterior is clad in asbestos-cement 'Trafford Tiles' and rolled steel sheeting, supported by steel stanchions.
The shed measures 180 feet by 60 feet (80 feet 7 inches including the annexe) and was originally designed with side-opening doors. It is organized into twelve 15-foot bays, reinforced by external raking steel stanchions on the northeast and northwest elevations. The lower sections of the cladding have been replaced with rolled steel sheeting. Clerestorey windows on the northern, eastern, and southern elevations, as well as on the annexe, consist of ten-over-three pane metal-framed units, one for each bay. The northwest elevation features continuous vertical lights. The original entrance on the northwest elevation has been filled in, and two sets of smaller ledge and brace timber doors have been inserted into the cladding, although the frame, stanchions, and superstructure remain intact. Similar doors are present in each gable wall. A full-height entrance has been cut through on the southeast elevation.
Attached to the southeast elevation is a ten-bay lean-to annexe that housed workshops and offices. The seventh bay from the south has been removed to accommodate the new entrance. The roof is supported by steel trusses, and the southeastern wall is clad internally in steel sheeting below window height. The doorway to the workshop remains in place, and the floor is made of concrete slabs with caulked joints.
