Description
The ice house, located at Belvedere Drive, is a Grade II listed structure built likely between 1748 and 1834. It features a cup and dome design, with a large dome made of red brick that is covered externally in render. The entrance, which is cambered and made of stock brick, dates from the early 19th century or later, and includes bricks set on end to create a castellated effect. Inside, there is a ventilation hole at the top of the dome, although the base of the ice chamber was not visible during the survey. The northeast side of the dome was replaced in the early 20th century with a vertical wall, and the original entrance passage has been demolished.
Historically, this ice house was constructed for Belvedere House, a Palladian-style residence built around 1720 for Sir Theodore Janssen. The estate changed hands in 1748 when purchased by Mrs. Martha Rush, and later passed to her son, Sir William Beaumaris Rush, in 1783, who demolished the original house and built a new one. By 1834, the property was sold to James Courthope Peach. An 1870s Ordnance Survey map indicates a mound at the foot of a lake in this location. Since there are no indications of an ice house on Rocque's map from 1746, it is believed that this structure was built sometime after 1748 and likely after 1783, when Sir William Rush expanded the estate. Following the demolition of Belvedere House after 1900, most of the ice house came to be situated within the grounds of number 1 Belvedere Drive, with a small portion in the grounds of number 3. In the early 20th century, the section belonging to number 3 was demolished, and the original curved wall of the dome was replaced by a vertical wall.
