Description
The Canons is a substantial manor house built in the late 17th century. It is constructed of brick with later stucco and features a plain tile hipped roof that extends to the eaves. The house has two storeys, a basement, and dormers. The west facade consists of five bays, with a two-bay extension to the left. The central bay of the original block projects slightly and has a square-headed entrance with an architrave and cornice, which is accessed by steps. The windows are square-headed, with the two right bays being blind. The sashes have flush frames and glazing bars. Above the first floor, there is a modillion eaves cornice. The south side has a three-bay return, and other facades also display architectural interest. Inside, the house retains a staircase with strong twisted balusters and some panelling. The Canons was built by John Odway, who received a building lease in 1680.
