991, Great West Road

No. 991 on Great West Road is a warehouse built between 1935 and 1936 by F E Simpkins for Curry's Ltd, serving as a distribution center for their chain of shops. The structure is made of reinforced concrete with some steel framing, particularly at the rear. It features a flat roof on the long office block at the front, while the 5-bay warehouse at the back has a jagged industrial profile with northern rooflights above a single storey.

The front section of the building has two to three storeys, highlighted by an impressive staircase tower at its center, arranged in a symmetrical composition of 3,6,1,6,3. The windows are all metal, emphasizing strong horizontal lines, with most being 4-light in a tripartite arrangement, alongside unique arched windows at the ends. The windows beside the central tower are curved, reflecting the moderne style.

Access to the building is via a flight of concrete steps leading to the first floor under the staircase tower, which features concrete balustrades with pylons topped with setbacks. The entrance has double doors framed by a stepped flat concrete surround and a flat canopy above. The central tower rises between corner pilasters, has a set back and toothed top, and retains remnants of a clock. The tripartite staircase window below contains 19 horizontal lights. This building is noted for being a remarkably complete example of the architectural style that the Great West Road is known for and has particular group value with its listed neighbors, the former Pyrene and Coty factories.
