Description

The National Westminster Bank is a bank building located on Great West Road in Brentford, constructed in 1935 by WFC Holden as the Osterley branch of the National Provincial Bank. The building features brown brick with Portland stone dressings and has a flat roof, consisting of a single storey. The main banking office is double-height and bow-fronted towards Great West Road, flanked by lower wings. The left wing includes a bow-fronted public entrance on the return side.

Designed in an Expressionist style, the bowed facade facing the road has three tall ladder windows with margin glazing, separated by columns with brick ribs that continue as moulded features in the stone-coped parapet. The lower wings have groups of similar full-height ribs forming straight angles, each equipped with a rainwater head and drainpipe that connect to a low stone-coped continuous plinth. The entrance on the return side features a bowed design with blind wings and a central recessed doorway, flanked by recessed margin glazed ladder windows, accessible via bowed and shaped steps.

The stone-coped parapet and plinth add to the building's character. Behind the facade, the blind return of the double-height office rises with ribbed angles. Although the interior has been fitted out to meet late 20th-century requirements, it still retains timber panelling on the walls and piers. The bank was designed to complement Sir Bannister Fletcher's Gillette Factory nearby.
