Description
The front block and return wings of the main Gillette building, designed by architect Bannister Fletcher, were constructed in 1937. This two-storey structure features a basement and a prominent central tower. The building is made of brick and has a symmetrical facade with three bays on each side of the central tower. The ends of the building project slightly and include iron-framed windows set in recessed panels on both storeys. The main windows are also arranged in two storeys and are adorned with decorative metal aprons, lacking brickwork beneath them. The building has a plain parapet, with an additional storey set back behind it.
The central section of the building projects forward and has a further projection at its base, which supports the tower. The entrance is approached by steps. The tower itself has a plain shaft, accented by slight pilaster strips and small slit windows. It features an open stage with enlarged classical window surrounds and balustrades on each face, topped with a shaped upper storey that includes a clock face on each side. The shorter return fronts mirror the design of the main facade.
