Description
The brick chest tomb located south of the Gates Monument at St Mary's Church dates from the mid-18th century. It features sides made of yellow and plum-colored brick, with projecting corners of plum and red brick that support a Portland stone ledger slab. The tomb has recently undergone consolidation.
Historically, Daniel Lysons' survey of Middlesex from 1800 mentions two now-unidentifiable monuments in Bedfont, which could possibly be this tomb. These monuments commemorated Mary Whaley, who died in 1742, and John Fyler, a merchant who died in 1756. This tomb is one of several similar monuments, reflecting the affluence of East Bedfont during that period as a desirable location for retirement.
