Description
Captain Miller's headstone is located at St Mary's Church and dates from around 1820, though the exact date of his death is not legible. The memorial consists of a headstone, footstone, and body-stone, with the body-stone made of Portland stone and the head and footstones made of York stone. The headstone, positioned at the west end, features a simple pedimental top with a raised cross in the center. It includes a lengthy inscription, which is now deteriorating, detailing Miller's notable career as an officer in the 46th Regiment of Foot during the Napoleonic Wars. The inscription mentions his involvement in the Defence of Dominica against a French attack in 1805, the capture of Martinique in 1809, and his presence at Guadaloupe, specifically at the Heights of St Louis. While the memorial itself is relatively typical for its time, reflecting the increased use of York stone due to canal developments, the inscription is particularly significant.
