Description
West Lodge is a gatehouse built around 1875, with an unknown designer. It features rough-faced Portland stone masonry with Bath stone dressings and stands two storeys tall. The structure consists of a pair of gatehouses connected by a four-centred arch with a hood mould, along with side extensions and canted bays at the rear. The windows are mullioned four-light, with two-light windows in the bay at the rear, and there is a rendered castellated parapet. The gates have since been removed. Historically, this lodge was constructed to serve Gunnersbury Park on land acquired by the Rothschilds in 1861. It first appears in the 1881 Census under the name 'Barons Lodges'. The building is designed in a picturesque castle or baronial style and is a notable feature in the surrounding landscape.
