Description

The Great Engine House at Kew Bridge Pumping Station was built between 1845 and 1846, with an extension added from 1869 to 1870 for the Grand Junction Water Works Company. Constructed from Roman cement, the building has a rectangular plan and stands three storeys high, featuring two bays on each side, with the eastern half being the later addition. It has round-headed windows with glazing bars set within three-storey, round-headed, shallow recesses, all linked by a moulded impost band. A bold cornice runs along the top, and the building has a flat roof.

On the east side, there is an entrance on the left that includes steps with a decorative cast-iron balustrade leading up to a boarded double door beneath a fanlight. Inside, the house contains impressive beam pumping engines that occupy all three storeys. One engine was made by Harvey and Company of Hayle, Cornwall, in 1869, while the other was produced in 1846 by Sandy Carne and Vivian of Copperhouse Foundry, Hayle. The interior features immense cast-iron Doric columns that support the beam axle, and the cylinders are fluted. There are also two cast-iron galleries at different levels, and the roof is lined with timber.
