Description

Zoffany House, at number 65 Strand on the Green, is a three-storey house commenced around 1704. It is constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings. The front façade features five double-hung sash windows per floor, each framed by an architrave with rubbed flat arches above. The doorway is distinguished by fluted Roman Doric pilasters supporting an entablature with triglyphs and guttae to both the architrave and frieze. Above the doorway is a fanlight and a terracotta lion. A parapet tops the building, and wrought iron gates and railings define the front garden. The interior retains early 18th century panelling in the main ground and first floor rooms, although other areas have been altered, particularly in 1936. The artist John Zoffany resided at Zoffany House from 1790 to 1810. The building is listed at Grade II* for its historical and architectural significance.
