Description
Old Vine Cottage is a group of buildings that date from the late 16th century to around 1700, with modern additions at the back. The left side features two parallel ranges with hipped ends facing the road, merging with the roof slope of a lower front range that runs parallel to the road. Behind on the right is another range, also parallel to the road. The roofs are mostly tiled and gable-ended, with 17th-century chimneys. The front elevation is made of 18th-century brown brick with red brick dressings. The windows are all from the 19th century or modern, including a large canted bay window on the ground floor and a first-floor oriel window under the gable that breaks the eaves. A pent porch fills the angle between the front and left ranges, and a brick chimney rises through it. The interior has been considerably restored, but there is still much original exposed timber, some with carpenters' marks, as well as a barrel vaulted brick cellar from around 1700. The overall appearance is very picturesque, although somewhat jumbled.
