Description

The Granada Cinema, located at 5016 Sheepcote Road, is a Grade II listed building that opened in 1937. It was designed by J Owen Bond, with Theodore Komisarjevsky responsible for the interior decoration. The building features a brown brick exterior and is situated on a corner site. Its design is characterized by a modest façade, which includes a cantilevered canopy over the central entrance and a large central window with seven lights set within a stone frame. The ground storey is clad in black tiles at the front and part of the return.

Inside, the cinema boasts a fine interior, highlighted by a double-height stripped classical entrance hall that features tall pilasters adorned with cartouches. A spacious stairway leads to the gallery, complete with a decorative metal balustrade. Although the auditorium has been altered by enclosing the stalls below the gallery, it still retains its impressive classical decoration. Notable elements include paired giant order fluted pilasters flanking the proscenium, triple arched decorative screens with pilasters on either side, and a decorative frieze that includes openwork grilles and painted idealized processional scenes above. The interior is further enhanced by a rich cornice, elaborate ceiling coffering above the stalls and circle, and original fine chandeliers. The cinema is also equipped with a Wurlitzer organ.
