Description
The Coronet Cinema, originally an Odeon, was built in 1936 by architects Andrew Mather and Horace Ward. This two-storey building features a rectangular plan and is constructed of brick with faience cladding on the front, topped with a flat roof. A notable aspect of the design is the projecting round glazed staircase tower and a canopied circular foyer that includes three double doors. The stepped rear elevation is supported by flat brick buttresses.
Inside, the foyer showcases the original pay-box and a circular "Odeon" sign set into the terrazzo floor. This leads to the stalls foyer, which features a well-preserved etched glass mirror depicting a cinema scene and a staircase with a stepped handrail leading to the return flight. The circle foyer retains its original curved lights and grilles. The auditorium is double height and includes a curved balcony, a proscenium arch with simple rib work around the screen, and a coved ceiling with lighting set into the soffits and decorative grilles at the rear. The ribbed walls are equipped with round vents above a curved wooden dado, and the original lighting system and carbon-arc projection equipment are still in place.
