Description

The orangery to the former Eltham House, now located at the north end of the grounds of Number 113 (Southeastern Gas Board), is a late 17th century or early 18th century structure featuring five bays. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and a stone plinth. The bays are defined by flat pilasters that have moulded stone bases and capitals, with paired pilasters at the outer corners and one and a half at the sides of the central section. These pilasters support an entablature with triglyphs in the frieze above, a moulded and dentilled brick cornice, and a stone blocking course.

The orangery has large windows fitted with modern casements. The projecting central section is made of multicoloured stock brick combined with red brick, featuring square angle pilasters that rise to stone Corinthian capitals above the roof level of the side sections. These pilasters support entablatures adorned with moulded architraves and trophies in the frieze. The cornices are richly detailed with dentils, egg and dart mouldings, and scrolled modillions with paterae in between. Above, there is an open pediment that is broken back in the center, which contains a round arched niche at the first floor level. This niche has a moulded brick architrave and a gauged brick half dome with a shell shape at the back, resting on a carved stone cornice from the ground floor.

The round arched entrance features red brick pilasters, carved stone impost blocks with short outer bands, a moulded brick architrave, and a keystone with a mask. This entrance supports a flat red brick panel that curves to fill the spandrels. There is a later glazed door and radial fanlight. Additionally, there are two short sections of red brick wall at the northern corners of the orangery on either side. The north face of the orangery is blank.
