Description
The Playhouse, located at 86 Eltham High Street, is an early 18th-century house featuring two storeys and a sunk basement with five windows. It has a high-pitched roof, recently covered with machine tiles, and includes four 19th-century flat dormers. The exterior is made of painted brick with a parapet, a first-floor band, and a brick plinth. The sash windows, which have glazing bars in flush moulded frames, are topped with gauged, flat brick arches, although some sashes have been replaced.
The building may have originally been three separate dwellings, as indicated by the presence of three doorways, each adorned with cornice hoods supported by heavy, carved, scrolled brackets resting on reeded pilasters. Currently, only the right doorway is in use, featuring a modern half-glazed door, while the other two are enclosed by a panelled pent extension. The rear of the building has weatherboarded gables and wrought iron area railings in a Gothic pattern.
Inside, the hall features a 15th-century stone fireplace with a Tudor arch and carved spandrels, along with 17th-century Dutch tiles. The fireplace is believed to have originated from Eltham Palace.
