Description
The London Coal Duty Marker is located on the county boundary on the west railway embankment, approximately 270 meters south of the road in South Oxhey, Watford Rural. This marker dates from 1851 and was cast by Falkirk Iron Company Ltd. It features a square stone base with a chamfered top, supporting a cast-iron square with four open panels and a moulded cornice. Above this, a short obelisk rises, making the entire structure stand between one and a half to two metres high. The marker indicates the extent of coal duty, which originally had a 20-mile radius from the General Post Office, but was moved in 1861 to its current position on the boundary of the Metropolitan Police District. For reference, it is near Stockers House on Stockers Farm Road in Rickmansworth Parish.
