Description

Greenfields School is a primary school built between 1951 and 1952, designed by H.T. Swain of Hertfordshire County Council. The building features a steel frame with horizontal precast concrete panels based on the Hills 8' 3" system, which was modified by Hertfordshire. It has low pitched and flat roofs and is single-storeyed with a compact plan. The layout includes a tall hall and a lower dining room that opens from the hall, along with classrooms and a staff room organized around an open courtyard. The hall has solid sides and a fully glazed end window that is five bays wide, rising to the low pitched roof. The dining room and classrooms are fully glazed, except for a low band of solid panels beneath the windows. The windows are metal framed, and the building features prominent eaves and a cornice. This school is notable as the first of the second generation of Hertfordshire schools built on the Hills 8' 3" system, which is characterized by tighter planning due to changes in Ministry of Education cost controls.
