Description

The Glade is a house dating from approximately 1912, and convincingly attributed to the architect C.F.A. Voysey. It is built of roughcast brick with stone dressings and has a tiled roof. The house is in an informal Arts and Crafts style, with an L-shaped plan. It is a low-spreading two-story building with an attic. The entrance is recessed, with a splayed angle leading to a single-story projecting bay situated in the inner angle of the L-shape. This bay features one and three-light casement windows with stone surrounds and leaded lights. A small gable, set back over the entrance but slightly projecting, contains a two-light window. In the angle with the projecting wing to the right is a six-light timber mullioned casement. The gable end of the wing to the front has a ground floor six-light stone mullion and transom casement, with eaves and a raked tiled hood over a four-light timber mullioned casement above. Battered angle buttresses are present at all corners. A six-light dormer is situated on the inner pitch of the right wing. To the left of the entrance, the main range has a scattering of one, two, and three-light stone mullioned windows, and a three-light dormer. The left end has a hipped roof with a tall end stack. The left return has two entrances and two two-light dormers flanking the stack. The right return of the wing has a ground floor canted bay. A small, buttressed projection extends towards the rear, with a hipped roof. The garden façade is more regular, featuring two semi-dodecahedral full-height bays with two rows of five-light stone mullioned windows. The ground floor features stone mullioned windows and canted bays, with buttresses and dormers similar to those on the front. The interior has not been inspected.
