Description

No. 7 Dene Road is a house built in 1903-04, designed by C. H. Townsend for its first occupant, Mr. Harris. The building features red brick in English bond on the ground floor, with a brick plinth. The upper floors and gable heads are adorned with tile hanging, and there is some weatherboarding. The house has a two-span roof visible on the left side, covered with tiles, and it stands two storeys tall.

The front has a two-window range under gables with dormers, and all gables are fitted with verge barge boards. The architectural style is Vernacular Revival. All openings are flat arched and feature leaded light casements of an original design. The entrance is recessed to the right and is set under a stone aedicule of Tuscan order, which has a slightly bowed entablature. The entrance door is a plank design with studded nail heads, also original.

There is an axial stack on the right return and an external stack on the left return, which has a gable facing with a one-window range and a polygonal bay below. The rear elevation has a three-window range, each under a facing gable, with a stack on the ridge line of the centre. There are three polygonal bays, with the left bay missing some original glazing, and a garden door to the left of the centre bay, which is of original design.

Inside, most fittings remain intact, including decorated plaster ceiling mouldings that are somewhat 'Gimsonesque', tiled fireplaces, panelling, cupboards, and doors with brass fittings.
