Description
The London Coal Duty Marker is located on the county boundary, on a bank on the east side of the railway, approximately 350 metres south of the road. This marker, which dates from around 1887, was cast by Falkirk Iron Co. Ltd. It features a square stone base with a chamfered top that supports a cast-iron square with four open panels and a moulded cornice. Above this cornice rises a short obelisk, making the entire structure stand between one and a half to two metres high. The marker indicates the extent of coal duty, which originally had a 20-mile radius from the General Post Office, but was moved in 1861 to its current location on the boundary of the Metropolitan Police District.
