Description

Paragon House is a late 18th century house situated in South Row. It is a three-storey building with a basement, originally featuring three windows on the front elevation and four windows on the return to Pond Road. The front facade is constructed of multicoloured stock brick, with a stone moulded and mutuled cornice incorporating a blocking course that conceals the roof. A fluted band runs along at the first floor level. The ground floor has an arcaded design, with a stone impost band supporting stone arches that rest on a stone blocking course of the basement; the arches are constructed with gauged brick and contain sash windows with glazing bars. The first-floor sash windows are within stucco lined reveals, while the ground-floor windows are round-headed.

The entrance front, on the return to Pond Road, also has three storeys and a basement, with four windows, although the windows in the left bay are blocked. A parapet hides the roof. Gauged, flat brick arches are above the sash windows with glazing bars. A lateral flight of eight steps leads to a front door, which consists of six-panel double doors with panelled jambs, a corniced head, patterned side lights, and a fanlight. The entablature surround to the door features pilasters with guilloche moulding and feather capitals, a fluted frieze, a central panel of harpies, and paterae at the angles, finished with a dentil cornice.

The garden front features a round bay that runs the full height of the building on the left side, with three curved sash windows with glazing bars on each floor. The building underwent a thorough restoration following war damage.
