Description

This is an early 18th-century group of terraced houses, comprising numbers 58 to 64 Royal Hill. Each house is two storeys high with an attic and basement, and features two windows. They have gently mansard roofs, renewed with machine tiles, each with a single dormer window. The dormers of numbers 58 and 60 have flat heads, while the others have low pediments. The houses are constructed of multicoloured stock brick with red brick dressings. A moulded and dentilled cornice, with a parapet above, runs along the top, although the parapet of number 60 is rendered. Windows are set within gauged, shallow segmental brick arches. Number 58 has recessed sash windows without bars. Number 60 has renewed sashes in slightly recessed box frames with stucco lined reveals, and a modern canted bay window on the ground floor. Numbers 62 and 64 have recessed sashes in stucco lined reveals on the first floor (those of number 62 are renewed), and sashes in flush frames on the ground floor (also renewed at number 62). Numbers 62 and 64 have a renewed red brick band at first floor level and stuccoed basements. Number 60 has a modern front door and has lost much of its original doorcase. The remaining houses have doors consisting of six fielded panels, topped by cornice heads (number 58’s being dentilled), and rectangular fanlights. Number 58’s doorcase is formed of flat pilasters, and features a tall architrave above the fanlight with a cornice, lacking an intervening frieze. Numbers 62 and 64 have moulded architraves, pulvinated friezes, and bracketed cornice hoods, where the doors are paired. Number 58 retains old wrought iron area railings. Number 60 has been significantly altered but is included as part of the group.
