Description
The Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital, located in the grounds southwest of the Royal Naval College, was built between 1703 and 1704 by James Stuart. It features a main south front that is three stories high with a basement and has thirteen windows. The building is stuccoed, a modification made at a later date. The central and end sections of the façade project slightly, and it has a low-pitched, hipped slate roof with separate roofs over the end sections. Architectural details include an entablature, a blocking course, a second-floor string, rusticated quoins, and a rusticated center bay up to the second floor. Above this, there is a pseudo-pediment displaying maritime arms. The entrance is marked by a two-storey arch located along the axis of the building. The windows are sash style, featuring glazing bars within moulded architraves and bracketed cills. The side elevations are similar in design to the main front.
