Avery Hill Training College (Entrance Gate And Adjoining Lodge)

Avery Hill Training College features an entrance gate and adjoining lodge, built in the late 19th century. The large gateway has a tall, round arched central entrance flanked by smaller side entrances. It is constructed of red brick and topped with a very high pitched, hipped tiled roof, which includes angle turrets with spike finials. The arches are adorned with moulded brick architraves, and the main arch displays a coat of arms on the keystone, supported by flanking pilasters and an entablature, all made of brick. The side sections have entablatures at the impost level of the central arch. The gateway is fitted with wrought iron patterned double gates.

To the right of the gateway is a one-storey lodge with an attic, also made of red brick and featuring a high pitched tiled roof. It has a central chimney along the ridge, a large square dormer, and a projecting ground floor with small windows. The inner elevation of the lodge includes one storey and an attic with two windows, two Dutch gabled dormers that reach the eaves, and two and three-light sash windows on the ground floor. The inner elevation of the gateway is covered in creeper.
