Description

Southend House is a house originally built in the early 18th century, though with visible work from the 17th century and potential remains from the 16th century. It has been divided into flats. The house is two storeys high with an attic and a sunk basement, and features five windows at the front. It has a steeply pitched slate roof with end chimneys; the chimney on the left has been rebuilt, and the one on the right is a large external stack with a row of five conjoined diagonal shafts, each topped with cornices at three different angles. Three square dormers are visible. The house is constructed of red brick and has a parapet. The left return features curved gable ends. A first-floor band runs along the front. The sash windows are fitted with delicate glazing bars and are from the early 19th century, set into older, flush-moulded frames. A two-storey, two-window extension, built in the late 19th century, is located on the right side. The entrance on the left return, also dating to the early 19th century, is set within a wall that was partly rebuilt and extended to the rear at that time; little remains of the doorcase, though paired pilasters flank the doorway on either side. The house extends significantly to the rear and has been altered and extended over various periods. The rear elevation displays early 19th-century windows and brickwork from that and earlier eras, along with two massive stacks of conjoined chimney shafts and a smaller, single chimney. The interior was largely restored in the late 19th century but retains an early 19th-century curved staircase. Parts of the house were in poor condition at the time of the 1971 survey.
