Description

West Greenwich Library is a Grade II listed building designed by Sir A B Thomas in the early 20th century. This two-storey, three-bay structure features a modest baroque style with a moderately pitched slated roof. The taller central section is topped by a high open cupola with a lead dome, supported by eight Tuscan columns on a square podium. The building has red brick walls, with stone urns flanking the pediment and carved brick armorial decoration in the tympanum.

The side bays are adorned with a stone mutule cornice and blocking course. The central first-floor window is round-arched, featuring a coved surround and a large carved keystone that extends to the main cornice. Below, there is a solid stone balcony with an oval plaque that rests on the cornice of the ground floor centre window, which has a wide Gibbs surround and narrow flanking windows. A stone dado with roll moulding is located below this.

The side sections include first-floor windows set in moulded architraves, which are lengthened at the sides to rest on the lower part of a stepped, projecting stone panel that supports a wide cill and rests on the cornice of the ground floor entrances. The doors are topped by a thick stone lintel that separates them from a rectangular fanlight with a leaded pattern, all framed in a modified Gibbs surround.

The rear elevation, visible from Peyton Place, is a single storey made of multi-coloured stock brick with red brick dressings. Behind the parapet, there is a dome featuring six tunnelled, round-arched windows and a glazed cupola. An inscription on a cartouche on the front balcony reads "The gift of Andrew Carnegie Esq."
