Description
Gurdwara Sahib Woolwich, formerly known as Woolwich Methodist Church, was built in 1816. This two-storey building features five windows and is constructed of multicoloured stock brick. The three central bays project slightly, and there is a stone cornice that is broken back at the sides. Above this, a high, stone-coped brick parapet is topped with a further cornice and a pediment that includes a blank round window.
The windows on both floors are round-headed and set in round arched recesses. There is a stone band at the first floor cill and a stuccoed band at first floor level. Access to the building is via six steps leading to a prostyle Tuscan porch, which has a blocking course above the cornice. The five-bay returns also have round arched windows, but without recesses. All arches are made of gauged brick, and the glazing has been replaced, including the central double entrance door. The door features a cornice head and a radial leaded fanlight, positioned under an arch that is the same width as the recesses on either side. A stone plaque in the centre of the parapet reads "The Methodist Chapel, 1816." The building was converted into a Sikh place of worship during the late 1970s.
