Description

The Methodist Church, formerly known as the Wesleyan Chapel, was built around 1807. It features a white brick construction with stone dressings, plastered returns, and a grey slate roof. The building has two storeys and consists of five bays, with the upper storeys set back. The ground floor includes pilastered, parapeted, and corniced end bays, each containing a central window with glazing bars and brick surrounds. An open portico is supported by two fluted columns with capitals and bases, which rest on dwarf walls that serve as plinths for the end bays. There is a stepped approach between the columns leading to four panelled doors at the end bays. To the right and left of the central panelled doors are round-headed windows with glazing bars, and above them are round-headed fanlights with glazing bars, flanked by brick pilasters.

On the first floor, the outer bays consist of two stepped blocks, with the outer blocks featuring stone cornices, parapets, and angle pilasters. The taller inner blocks have brick cornices and parapets. A central arcade of three round-headed windows with glazing bars is flanked by pilasters, with a cornice over a frieze that reads "Methodist Church." Above this, a moulded pediment is surmounted by a painted cupola with a square base and sunk chamfered angles, which continues through a moulded cornice to a tall dome topped with an elaborate weathervane and louvres on the main faces.

The full height of the second bay on the returns is plastered, with upper windows featuring glazing bars and margins. The ground floor has a vertically boarded door to the left and a blocked opening to the right. The plastered returns have two storeys and four bays, with an eaves band, pilasters between the windows, and a band below the lower windows. The lower windows are rectangular, while the upper windows have round heads, all with glazing bars and margins.
