Description
Forty Hall is a Grade I listed building constructed between 1629 and 1636 for Sir Nicholas Raynton. This square house has three storeys and six windows, featuring a high-pitched, hipped roof made of green slate, topped with four groups of tall octagonal brick chimneys. The exterior is light red brick with quoins, window architraves, and bands that are now covered in stucco, though they were likely originally stone. The building has a brick plinth and sash windows with glazing bars, some dating from around 1800, while others have been replaced.
The house includes 18th-century Doric porches and a Corinthian order with a pediment framing the first-floor center window on the south front. The main entrance porch is Ionic and has a later glass enclosure. Inside, there is some original decoration, particularly in the plaster ceilings and one panelled room, as well as a screen with early classical motifs in the dining room. Much of the interior decoration is from the 18th century, including an arched Ionic hall screen and hall plasterwork featuring trophies of arms, along with additional plasterwork and panelling throughout. There are modern east extensions that are designed in a similar style.
