Description
Nos. 138 and 140 on Turkey Street are a pair of houses built around the mid-18th century and have been altered over time. They are constructed of stucco and feature a double-pitched, hipped roof covered with slate. The buildings rise two storeys plus a basement and present three bays to Turkey Street, with segmental-headed sashed windows; the central bay is blind. Each house has an entrance on the return elevations, with three bays and a central entrance that includes a gabled Victorian porch and segmental-headed sashed windows. A stucco band runs between the first and second storeys on the front and sides, complemented by rusticated quoins in stucco. The eaves are bracketed, and there are two large chimney stacks.
The interiors of the houses retain much of their mid-18th century character, featuring wider staircases except for the flights from the ground to the first floor, which have turned balusters. No. 140 has preserved complete panelling on the ground and first floors, including cornices, arched niche cupboards, original doors with 'L' shaped hinges, and one surviving original chimneypiece, while others have been removed. The walls in No. 138 are covered, but it likely retains early features below, including a 18th-century shelved niche in the rear ground floor room.
