Description
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist, located on West Street in Erith, is a Grade II* listed building. The church features a nave, chancel, and west tower, which are primarily from the 12th century, although some older elements are incorporated. The south aisle dates from the 13th century, while the south chapel was built in the 15th to 16th centuries. The walls are constructed of flint and stone. Inside, the nave arcade consists of three short round piers and double-chamfered arches. Significant restoration work was carried out in 1877 by architects Habershon and Pite, which included the addition of a south porch and a north chapel and aisle. The east window of the south chapel was designed by Kempe in 1905. The church contains brass memorials from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as monuments from the 16th and 17th centuries. In the churchyard, there are notable monuments and tombs, including memorials to John Harris from 1752 and George William Brown from 1848. There is a wooden lychgate to the south, although it is not of special interest.
